Drug Use Monitoring in Australia: An expansion into the Pilbara

Description

In South Hedland (regional Western Australia), 51 police detainees were interviewed and compared with a sample of 209 Perth (metropolitan) detainees. In the Pilbara a significantly larger percentage of the population is Aboriginal. The findings indicate that the South Hedland detainees displayed higher levels of recent alcohol use and lower levels of illicit drug use. They are also more likely to commit crimes against the person and public order offences, both of which have been linked with substance use. The findings suggest that a holistic approach to dealing with the higher levels of substance use is needed.
