This is the New South Wales Government’s response to the Noetic Group’s ‘Strategic review of the New South Wales juvenile justice system’ (2010). The Government acknowledges the review’s finding that the number of young people in custody is rising, there is significant over representation of Aboriginal young people in custody and that more effective options may be available to reduce recidivism amongst young people. The review puts forward three overall options for reform, with a set of recommendations grouped under each option. In developing this response, recommendations have not been considered according to these specific options but all recommendations have been considered on their individual merits. The response outlines current policies and practices in the state.
