Description
The Inquiry finds the Northern Territory child protection system is in crisis for several reasons: including insufficient resources; the number of notifications of children formally identified as at risk which remain uninvestigated; and an almost complete lack of Aboriginal controlled services. The report contains 147 recommendations focusing on: the functioning of the current statutory child protection system; adoption of a population or a public health approach emphasised on supporting and working with families; and better child protection decision-making; and a referral service which involves non-government agencies. It is concluded that children’s safety and wellbeing is a shared responsibility based on consultation and collaboration.
