Indigenous Australians and liquor licensing restrictions

Usually at the instigation of Indigenous community organisations, licensing authorities around Australia have imposed restrictions in a number of localities in remote and rural Australia. Evaluations of these restrictions have generally found that they have led to reductions in per capita alcohol consumption and key indicators of harm such as hospital admissions and police incidents, and have also had a greater measurable local impact than interventions such as treatment and health promotion programs. This chapter also identifies five interrelated barriers to the success of additional restrictions, and draws out the lessons to be learnt from Indigenous experience with these.
