Indigenous Justice

Description

After discussing the extent of Indigenous disadvantage in many areas, this paper highlights the over representation of Indigenous youth in the criminal justice system, and the need to address Indigenous justice by dealing with the underlying causes of Indigenous problems. The paper outlines the work of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) in addressing these causes through its Community Development Employment Projects and other programs, including Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services and the Family Violence Prevention Program, and discusses the necessity of taking a co-ordinated and wholistic approach to prevention initiatives, with particular reference to the role of education, government partnerships, and initiatives within the private sector.
