Parole in Western Australia: An analysis of parole cancellations of female offenders

Description

This paper is not specific to Indigenous women but provides valuable insights into re-offending by female parolees. Most women in the study had parole revoked due to drug use. This suggests programs to help the offender cope once released and deal with past issues of substance abuse may be of value. Community based programs were found to have more benefit in reducing recidivism than in-prison programs. Developing programs that provide pro-social support to help parolees succeed in the community would be beneficial. The cost of these programs should be considered in comparison to the high cost of re-incarceration.
