Systemic Racism as a Factor in the Overrepresentation of Aboriginal People in the Victorian Criminal Justice System

Description

The project brief for this research was to: investigate and document the incidence of systematic racism within the criminal justice system; document the relationship between systematic racism and the over-representation of Aboriginal people within the system; and provide advice to the Aboriginal Justice Forum outlining implications for current strategies. In particular it was intended that through detailed case studies across all Victorian regions, the research would identify and document the experience of systematic racism by Aboriginal Victorians in their contact with the various components of the criminal justice system.
