This report documents how Aboriginal children and young people aged 0 to 18 years are faring against the whole-of-government outcomes framework, focusing on their health, wellbeing, learning, safety and development. It provides a systematic review of the evidence, allowing the Government to shape policy and programs and to identify where additional action may be required. The major section on justice covers social and emotional wellbeing, victimisation, offending, youth justice, parental imprisonment, contact with police, the child protection system, and out of home placement. Other topics include bullying, and teenage lifestyle issues, including drugs. Although there have been significant improvements, Aboriginal children are over-represented in child protection and contact with the criminal justice system. The report is extensively supported with data and forms the evidence base for the State’s plan for Aboriginal children to 2020.
