"The Things Which Must Be Done...": Aboriginal incarceration: the urgent need for Aboriginal community solutions

Description

This is an edited version of the Hon. Bob Debus’ Society of Labor Lawyers Annual lecture in memory of Frank Walker. In it, Mr Debus reflects on changes in the Justice system in NSW, and the Commonwealth, and impacts on Indigenous people. He comments on the increase in incarceration rates in the context of a national ‘law and order’ auction, diversion and sentencing practices, Land Rights, self-determination, the NT Intervention and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
